Fergie is the newest member of The Commentary Box Editorial Team. Having been one of the biggest contributors to the site since it’s conception we thought it only correct that he join the team officially. So much so in fact, that when the idea was proposed by Jonno, we weren’t sure why we hadn’t thought of it before.

One of the most natural writers with a style all his own, Fergie sees the sporting world from a comical point of view which tickles even the humourless. Unique would be understatement. His scripts for the podscasts illustrate this perfectly

A Calisleman now based in Auckland, New Zealand, Fergie is presently working for the New Zealand Herald and works as a music television presenter in his spare time.

Ferg’s sporting pièce de résistance was a a 9 year old in gym class, where as the story goes he perfectly executed a forward roll. Unfortunately his promising career was prematurely sythed down 5 mins later when he received nasty burns on the decent from the rope climb.

His favourtie sporting moment was on the final day of the 1998-99 season. Carlisle United needed to beat Plymouth at home or lose the Football League place they had held for 71 years. Five minutes into stoppage time the score was 1-1. Carlisle’s goalkeeper, on loan from Swindon, was Jimmy Glass. Carlisle won a corner. Glass ran the length of Brunton Park to score the winner with one second to spare. The Cumbrians were saved and Scarborough were relegated to the Conference.

Gruff

After experiencing mundane corporate hell at Haymarket, Gruff has decided it was time to chase the dream once more. His passion for writing, particularly cricket writing was the egg that hatched into The Commentary Box. (Jonno’s love for a rant and horror at the current state of the media might have been the sperm. Is that a bit too graphic?)

Gruff divides his time between, working full time in the publishing industry, getting his journalism diploma, writing and editing this website, seeing his long distanced Swiss girlfriend, looking for job opportunities and thinking about his next trip back to India.

Once an able scrum half he decided the world of Macho-Erotica that is University Rugby was not quite his scene (and who can blame him? ‘Last one to drink a pint of wee is a nancy!’) He turned his full attention to cricket and is currently first choice wicket keeper at Fullers Division 1 Hampton Wick Royal CC.

Jonno
email : commboxjonno@googlemail.com

Jonno’s Encyclopedic knowledge of football especially the early Premiership years, earned him the nickname ’statto’ at university. Fortunately he has mellowed somewhat as he was in danger of becoming footballs equivalent of TMS’s ‘Bearded Wonder’.

Jonno works for the Sky Television in the UK. No one seems to know what it is he does exactly, and we are starting to wonder if Jonno himself knows.

The Rant corner was especially created with Jonno in mind. No one enjoys a spontaneous rant more.

Jonno’s sites his greatest sporting moment was his “first cricket game against Allanbourne Middle School. Astro- turf wicket. 2nd ball wide…5th ball middle and off out the ground (well sort of….it was the old stumps on springs.) Bowled a tight second maiden over. My cricket career was never to hit such heights again”.
